Liane Kerbyson, LPCC

Seasoned Talk Therapy and EMDR Therapist in Berkeley, CA

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here.

I have spent my entire life in awe of human beings, the experiences that shape them, and the ability that each individual holds to heal if given the opportunity. As a therapist, I believe that harnessing that healing power is a process of curiosity. During our time together I work to create a safe space that allows us to explore. We will look at the coping skills you have been using throughout your life, and identify those that are still healthy and effective while incorporating new skills that will make life better. I will also partner with you to closely look at the narrative that you have created and challenge its validity. We will identify messages you have received over time that have influenced the way that you view, not only yourself, but the world around you. Together we will create a more accurate self-narrative to carry into the present and future allowing you to more easily reach your goals and the life that you are hoping to live.

Why Liane does this work: I entered the corporate world directly after college marketing for a large insurance company. It became very evident that the part of my job that I enjoyed the most were the clients that I worked with and the co-workers that sat by my side. I began to notice a pattern and found that, quite frequently, many of those individuals felt comfortable sharing their personal struggles without prompting. Some even admitted, afterwards, that they weren’t sure why they opened up to that extent, except that they felt safe to share and knew that they were not being judged. I began to realize that this was not a new experience and that, for most of my life, this has been a role I have played. I have always held a curiosity about the journeys of others and believed that being witness to someone’s story had the power to connect. After my children reached school age, I decided to go back to graduate school and build on this strength. Over the last several years, I have been fortunate enough to have heard the stories of many adolescents and adults and, in most cases, I have witnessed an unexpected outcome that always makes me smile. When we change ourselves for the better, those around us benefit greatly and experience a more positive life, making the ripple effect of what I love to do even more powerful.

What Liane feels is the best part of her job:  The best part of my job would be the a-ha moment when clients recognize their ability to take back their power and decide how they would like to exist going forward. That moment can be mind-blowing for clients because, for so much of their life, they have felt that change was not an option. It is incredible to watch a person recognize the value that they have held all along, practice a new way of being, and leave in the ‘driver’s seat’ of their life.

How Liane spends her free time: I love hanging out with our grown humans when they are home visiting. When they are not, I enjoy playing with our 5 huskies and 1 Irish Wolfhound or riding my horses. I love to dance randomly while I’m cleaning and LOVE to play Pop-A-Shot or ping pong with my husband. This happens daily!
